Rules and regulations

 Muay Thai Rules-Competition
The complete boxer must always remember that the winner of a Muay Thai bout is decided according to rules. He must know and strictly follow the rules of the Muay Thai competition.

All effective Muay Thai techniques score
To produce a good score the technique should have a visible effect on the opponent. It is not the number or variety of Muay Thai techniques, but their effectiveness that the judges are looking for, so it is possible to win using one Muay Thai technique exclusively. Judges are looking to award the fight to the strongest fighter. They are looking for evidence of the effect of Muay Thai techniques. And they are looking for mental and physical strength, and technical ability.

 Muay Thai Rules - scoring
A panel of three judges decide at the end of each round if the round resulted in a draw (scores 10:10), a win by significant margin (score 10:9) or a win by undisputed margin (10:8). At the end of the match the score judges add up the points scored and nominate a winner to the referee. If there are three different votes (win, defeat, draw) at the end of the match the verdict is a draw.

 Muay Thai Rules
A Muay contest is divided into no more than five rounds. Each round is three minutes long, with a two minute rest period in between. Contestants must weigh in naked before the fight. Contestants must have been taught the art of Muay Thai boxing by a teacher. There must be a time keeper in every contest.

 Muay Thai Rules Regarding Dress
Contestants must wear no shirt or shoes. The sacred headband (Mongkon) must be removed on completion of Ram Muay ritual dance, before the start of the bout. The application of any ointment or herb that may be repugnant to your opponent is prohibited. Hands should be wrapped with soft tape not longer than 12 yards and not wider than 2 inches. Warm-up

Before stretching or conditioning exercises the Muay Thai exponent must first warm up to raise body temperature and increase heart rate. This can be done by skipping rope, jogging or any aerobic exercise.

A very important aspect of Muay Thai training is strength and conditioning.

Strength and speed are closely related, muscle mass can help prevent injuries from impact.

Press-ups provide great upper body conditioning.

Perform press-ups with the hands in various positions.

Hands shoulders width apart, lower your body to the floor as low as possible with out touching the floor with your body then return to the original position with arms straight.

Do this for 12 repetitions, rest 30 seconds then do another 12, rest again and then perform another set of 12.

Now spread your hands further apart and repeat the above exercise.

Place your hands on the floor with fingers of both hand pointing towards each other as close as possible and again repeat the above exercise. This strengthens the triceps muscle.

You can perform advanced Push-ups, having a partner either kneel on your back or push down with their hand to increase resistance.

advanced stretch, demonstration purposes only Stretching

Most martial artists undertake stretching exercises in order to improve their kicking technique. They also tend to associate flexibility exclusively with the art of kicking.

However all sportsmen and women should appreciate that if flexibility was to become a major component of their training programmes the number of injuries sustained would decrease dramatically.

Stretching is without doubt one of the most beneficial exercises one can do.

It loosens the tightened snarled tensed muscles and tendons that deter circulation and relaxation.

Various styles of martial arts have different stretching exercises all of which have value. However the underlying principles are the same, bouncing does not improve flexibility, this is because of the stretch reflex process which is the bodies protection against over stretching, the tendons tend to tense up during the bouncing action in order to prevent damage.

This involuntary reflex action can be overcome once a muscle is stretched to its full extent and held for 6 seconds or more, this happens because of what is know as the inverse stretch reflex. This reflex allows the antagonistic muscle that is being stretched to relax, promoting the muscle to be stretched even further without causing damage. This is called static stretching.

Always warm up first. Stretch until you find a position of mild tension, hold for 10-30 seconds until the tension subsides then move a fraction further until once again you feel the tension and hold again for another 10-30 seconds.

Stretch regularly at least three times per week to improve flexibility.

When doing a complete body workout, aerobic or weight training its good to leave the flexibility to the end when all the muscles are warm and amenable to stretching

Advanced Push-ups

Advanced push ups can be preformed as shown. This can help improve overall strenght. Stenght and speed of technique are directly related, one an expontent of Muay Thai used weight traing to increase his strenght he should also use upper body strecthing techniques.

Advanced "Sit-Ups"

Sit ups can be practiced as shown, this benefits both participants, increasing strength in the abdomen, lower back, legs, shoulders and arms.

Another advanced form of "sit-up" is as shown (left). This again benifits both participants, an helps strenghten the back muscles as well as promoting flexibility
